Every domain registrar comparison article leads with first-year pricing. That's the wrong metric. You pay the first-year price once. You pay the renewal price every year for as long as you own the domain. A registrar that charges $2 in year one but $20 every year after isn't cheap — it's a trap.
We pulled current pricing from 8 major registrars and calculated the only number that matters: what you'll actually pay over 5 years for a single .com domain, including the first-year registration and four years of renewals.
The real cost: 8 registrars ranked by 5-year total cost
| # | Registrar | Year 1 | Renewal/yr | 5-Year Total | Free WHOIS | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Spaceship | $9.08 | $10.18 | $49.80 | ✓ | Register → |
| 2 | Cloudflare | $10.11 | $10.11 | $50.55 | ✓ | At-cost |
| 3 | Dynadot | $10.88 | $10.88 | $54.40 | ✓ | Register → |
| 4 | Porkbun | $10.37 | $11.08 | $54.69 | ✓ | porkbun.com |
| 5 | NameSilo | $10.95 | $10.95 | $54.75 | ✓ | namesilo.com |
| 6 | Namecheap | $9.58 | $15.98 | $73.50 | ✓ | Register → |
| 7 | GoDaddy | $11.99 | $22.99 | $103.95 | ✓ | Register → |
| 8 | Network Solutions | $12.99 | $46.99 | $200.95 | $$$ | Avoid |
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive registrar over 5 years is $151.15 per domain. For a portfolio of just 20 domains, that's $3,023 you'd either save or waste depending on your choice.
Why Cloudflare isn't our top pick (despite at-cost pricing)
Cloudflare Registrar sells domains at wholesale cost — they make $0 on domain registration. Their .com at $10.11 is literally what Verisign charges. So why isn't Cloudflare #1?
Because Cloudflare Registrar is a domain management tool, not a full registrar experience. You can't search for new domains on Cloudflare without first adding them to a Cloudflare account. There's no aftermarket, no bulk management tools for investors, and the TLD selection is limited compared to Spaceship, Namecheap, or Dynadot. If you're already using Cloudflare for DNS/CDN, their registrar is an excellent add-on. But for most people, Spaceship offers comparable pricing ($10.18 renewal vs. Cloudflare's $10.11) with a far better user experience.
Cheapest by TLD: .com isn't the only extension that matters
| TLD | Spaceship | Namecheap | GoDaddy | Dynadot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | $10.18 | $15.98 | $22.99 | $10.88 |
| .net | $11.40 | $15.98 | $22.99 | $12.99 |
| .org | $10.00 | $14.98 | $21.99 | $12.99 |
| .io | $51.75 | $36.98 | $59.99 | $35.99 |
| .co | $25.98 | $29.98 | $38.99 | $25.99 |
Prices shown are annual renewal rates, not first-year registration. Verified March–April 2026.
Spaceship leads on .com, .net, and .org renewals. For .io and .co domains, Dynadot is marginally cheaper. No single registrar is cheapest across every TLD — but Spaceship and Dynadot dominate the top spots consistently.
Three rules for actually saving money on domains
1. Always check the renewal price, not the registration price
The first-year price is a one-time cost. The renewal price is what you'll pay every year for the life of the domain. A $2 first-year deal with a $20 renewal costs more over 5 years ($82) than a $10 registration with a $10 renewal ($50).
2. Transfer to save — don't renew at a bad rate
Domain transfers include one year of registration. If your current registrar charges $22/yr for renewal but Spaceship charges $9.68 for a transfer (which includes a year), you save $13 instantly by transferring instead of renewing. Wait until your domain is at least 60 days old and not locked, then initiate a transfer.
3. Register for multiple years when prices are low
If a registrar is running a promotion, register for 2–5 years to lock in the rate. Most registrars let you pre-pay for up to 10 years of registration, protecting you from future price increases.
The cheapest registrar overall: Spaceship
With the lowest .com renewal at $10.18/yr, free WHOIS privacy, and a 5-year TCO of $49.80, Spaceship is the price leader for 2026. Dynadot is the close runner-up at $54.40.
